How Does Heat Spread Through a Room? The Principle of Radiant and Infrared Heating

Heat spreads throughout a living space through conduction, convection, and radiation. Each of these principles affects how quickly a room heats up, whether the heat stays near the ceiling, and what temperature you actually perceive. Infrared heating relies primarily on radiant heat, which is absorbed by walls, floors, furniture, and people. In this article, we’ll explain in simple terms how the different modes of heat transfer differ, why air temperature alone doesn’t determine thermal comfort, and how the output, placement of the infrared panel, and thermostat affect energy consumption and the even distribution of heat throughout your home.

Heat spreads throughout a room in three ways
1) Basic Principles

Heat spreads throughout a room in three ways

In a living space, heat is transferred by conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction occurs within materials, such as walls or floors. Convection occurs because heated air rises and cooler air sinks. Radiation transfers energy directly between surfaces without first having to heat all the air. Every heating system uses all three principles, but in different proportions. A radiator operates primarily through convection, while an infrared panel transfers most of its energy through radiation. Surfaces in the room absorb the heat, gradually warm up, and then heat the surrounding air as well. This is precisely why a well-designed infrared heating system can create a more balanced sensation of warmth. When choosing a system, don’t focus solely on the number of watts. Location, distance from obstacles, and the area the panel actually radiates heat toward are also important. For even heating, a practical choice is, for example, the CEILING PRO ceiling-mounted infrared panel, which radiates heat across a wide area of the room.

Why Is It Usually Warmer Near the Ceiling Than Near the Floor?
2) Airflow

Why Is It Usually Warmer Near the Ceiling Than Near the Floor?

Warm air has a lower density and therefore rises. It gradually cools near the ceiling and returns downward. This natural circulation is most pronounced with heating systems that primarily heat the air. The result can be high temperatures near the ceiling, while it remains noticeably cooler at foot level. This temperature distribution is neither comfortable nor energy-efficient, because some of the energy ends up where you don’t normally need it. Although an infrared panel does not completely eliminate air circulation, it directs most of its output directly toward surfaces and people. This can reduce sharp temperature stratification and dust swirling. The difference is influenced by ceiling height, insulation, window size, and furniture placement. You can perform a simple check using two thermometers: place one approximately 20 cm above the floor and the other at head height. A large difference indicates uneven heating. In smaller rooms, a BASIC wall-mounted infrared panel with an output selected based on the room’s heat loss may be a suitable solution.

3) Radiant Heat

How an infrared panel heats walls, furniture, and people

Radiant heat spreads directly from a warmer surface to cooler surfaces within the source’s radiation field. When an infrared panel is operating, its surface emits infrared energy into the room. Walls, floors, furniture, and even the human body absorb this energy and convert it into heat. The warmed surfaces then gradually release the energy back into the room while simultaneously heating the surrounding air. As a result, you can feel the warmth before the temperature of the entire volume of air rises. This requires an unobstructed path for radiation. A large cabinet, curtain, or other obstacle in front of the panel will block some of the output and impair heat distribution. Therefore, position the panel so that it faces the occupied area of the room and is not covered. In a living room or home office, the FRAMELESS frameless infrared panel is an excellent choice, as it blends easily into the interior and does not take up floor space. The correct placement has just as much impact on the resulting comfort as the output itself.

Why Air Temperature Alone Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
4) Thermal Comfort

Why Air Temperature Alone Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

The sensation of warmth isn’t determined solely by the reading on a room thermometer. The temperature of the walls, floor, windows, and other surfaces around you is also important. If these surfaces are cold, your body radiates more heat toward them, and you may feel cold even when the air temperature is relatively high. Conversely, when these surfaces warm up, the room feels more comfortable, and there’s no need to overheat the air as much. This is the main reason why users perceive radiant heating differently than conventional radiators. An infrared panel helps increase the average temperature of surrounding surfaces, which promotes more stable thermal comfort. However, the results will not be felt equally quickly in every building. Solid masonry takes longer to heat up than a lightweight partition, but it can also retain some of the heat for longer. In the bathroom, this principle can be put to practical use with the MIRROR infrared panel, which radiates heat into the space while also serving as a mirror. When adjusting the thermostat, therefore, pay close attention to how you feel and make changes in small increments.

Ceiling and wall installations each have their own advantages
5) Panel Location

Ceiling and wall installations each have their own advantages

The placement of the infrared panel determines which areas the radiant heat will reach. A wall-mounted panel is suitable where there is open space in front of it and it can be directed toward the living area. A ceiling-mounted panel radiates heat from top to bottom, making good use of the available ceiling space and minimizing obstruction by furniture. It is particularly suitable for rooms with limited wall space, such as kitchens, offices, or open-concept living areas. However, the panel must not be installed arbitrarily. Always follow the installation specifications for the specific model, the prescribed distances, and the manufacturer’s instructions. Wall-mounted models do not belong on the ceiling, and ceiling-mounted models should not be installed on the wall unless the documentation explicitly permits it. Before installation, also check the load-bearing capacity of the substrate and the location of the electrical supply. An interesting solution is the CEILING LED ceiling-mounted infrared panel, which combines heating and lighting in a single unit. For larger rooms, it is often more advantageous to use multiple panels with lower power output than a single high-power source in the corner.

The right thermostat determines how long the system runs
6) Regulation and Consumption

The right thermostat determines how long the system runs

The power consumption of an electric heater is determined not only by the panel’s power rating but mainly by the length of time it is turned on. A 700-watt panel consumes 0.7 kWh when operated continuously for one hour. In practice, however, the thermostat turns the heater off once the set temperature is reached and turns it back on only when the temperature drops. Actual energy consumption therefore depends on the home’s heat loss, outdoor weather conditions, the desired temperature, and the ventilation method. The most common mistake is choosing a panel with insufficient power. A low-power panel runs for a long time, heats the room slowly, and may not provide the expected level of comfort. Conversely, unnecessarily high output requires precise control to prevent overheating. Do not place the thermostat directly within the panel’s radiant field, near a window, or next to a door, as it would measure a distorted temperature. For a typical household, an infrared panel with a Wi-Fi thermostat is practical, as it allows you to set a daily schedule and limit heating when you’re away. The greatest savings usually come from proper output design, a reasonable temperature, and short, intense ventilation sessions.

Provozuji asi měsíc a maximální spokojenost s účinností i vzhledem. Jediná výtka vede k termostatu, který umí regulaci pouze po celých stupních a mně by vyhovovalo 22,5 °C. Komunikace i doprava perfektní.
